About the Collection
An archive of Europe’s forgotten modernities.
The Gaupan Collection is a privately curated collection dedicated to the rediscovery, preservation, and contextualization of overlooked currents within European modern art.
Centered around artists who once contributed to the visual language of the 19th and 20th centuries — yet gradually disappeared from the dominant canon — the collection seeks to illuminate forgotten lineages of modernism across Europe. Its focus lies not on the already institutionalized masterpieces of art history, but on aesthetically compelling and historically meaningful works that remain underrepresented in contemporary discourse.
Spanning painting, works on paper, sculpture, and post-war experimentation, the collection brings together positions from Dutch modernism, expressionism, post-war abstraction, CoBrA-related practices, and other marginal yet influential artistic movements. Particular attention is given to artists whose work reflects psychological intensity, formal innovation, and cultural transition.
Guided by both academic research and intuitive curatorial vision, Gaupan approaches collecting not merely as acquisition, but as a form of cultural preservation. Each artwork is understood as part of a broader intellectual and historical network — a fragment of Europe’s artistic memory that deserves renewed visibility.
Through documentation, research, exhibitions, and long-term conservation, the Gaupan Collection aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of Europe’s forgotten modernities and the fragile artistic narratives that shaped them.
